Trip to Alaska - 2009

Eric and Bahar took a 7 day Alaskan Cruise on the Sapphire Princess this fall. We took a flight to Anchorage, Alaska, where we embarked the ship. From here, we cruised through the College Fjord and Glacier Bay. We then visited Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, and finally disembarked in Vancouver.

Glacier Bay - Pictures

Glacier Bay was by far the most scenic part of our cruise. Glacier Bay consists of over 3.3 million acres of forest, mountain peaks rising up to 15,000 feet, and 12 tidewater glaciers. We had the opportunity to see the Margerie glacier calve. It was quite an experience! We also saw a whale, after much waiting!

Skagway - Pictures
Skagway was known to hopeful gold rushers as the gateway to the gold fields. The treacherous White Pass route, used by countless stampeders, left many dead. By 1898, the gold rush resulted in Skagway being Alaska's largest town with a population of 20,000. Today, Skagway has a population of less than 1,000.

Mo and Kam went rock climbing in Skagway and had a great time. The rest of us took the White Pass excursion, which while a bit long was interesting.

Juneau - Pictures
Juneau is the capital of Alaska, with a population of 31,000. The tourism industry is the community's largest private employer. Other major industries include fishing, retail, and mining.

Mo and mom took a wilderness hike, while the rest of us visited the Gastineau gold mine and mill. The mine recovered 50,000 ounces of gold from 12 million tons of ore. It was designed to recover gold from 6000 tons of ore per day; however, it actually handled 10,000 tons per day. We even had a chance to pan for gold!

Ketchikan - Pictures
In Ketchikan, Mo went snorkeling and just loved it! The rest of us visited the Tongass National rainforest, Alaska's largest rainforest, where we saw some interesting vegetation and a family of black bears catching dinner! That was quite a sight.

Sapphire Princess - Pictures
As you can see, most of the pics revolve around eating! Not a big surprise. Tea time was by far the best 'meal' of the day.

Vancouver - Pictures
Our trip ended in Vancouver, which we were just blown away with. What a beautiful and fit city!
